Join the Joyful Brigade: Volunteer this Holiday Season!
Attention all youth! As the holiday season approaches, it's time to spread warmth, compassion, and joy to those in need. Volunteering is not only about giving back—it's a chance to make a difference in our community and create lasting memories. Whether it's serving meals at a local shelter, wrapping gifts for underprivileged children, or organizing a donation drive, each act of kindness has the power to transform lives and improve our communities.

Here are a few opportunities in Schuylkill County:

Bell Ringing for Salvation Army

The Salvation Army Pottsville Corps needs volunteers for this holiday season's Red Kettle Campaign. There are several locations. Please contact Lt. Betty Ellen at 570-622-5252 to sign up for a couple of hours.

The Salvation Army Tamaqua Service Center is also in need of volunteers for the Red Kettle Campaign and has locations in Orwigsburg, Tamaqua, Hometown, and Minersville. For questions call 570-668-0410. To register sign up here.

Dustin’s Adventureland is looking for volunteers to help with wrapping and prepping work for the 4th Annual Dustin’s Delivers Christmas. Visit sign up sheet for all the details, which can be found here.

“YOU GO GIRL” SERIES: LIFE SKILLS FOR YOUTH WOMEN

Our Chamber neighbors to the the North are hosting a life skills for young women series. Topics range from banking basics to responsible social media use to cooking basics and more!

Registration is required. You may register online at hazletonchamber.org (events & news) or call Leann, at (570) 436-7960. All sessions will be available via zoom and attendees will receive the zoom link to enter upon registration.

However, the May through December sessions will begin to be held in-person, at the Catholic Social Services Family Center (former church), located at 106 S. Church Street in Hazleton.

Volunteer Opportunities with Helping Harvest

Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank serves Schuylkill and Berks County residents. Their mission is to feed the hungry by acquiring and distributing food to people in need. Volunteers are essential in meeting this mission! Volunteers repack food drive donations, stuff the monthly senior citizen food totes, distribute the weekly Produce 4 Kids bags, prep newsletters for mailing, and many more important tasks! Volunteer opportunities area available for individuals 12 years old or older (Volunteers under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, teacher or other supervisor). IBEW Apprenticeship Applications being accepted now

IBEW Apprenticeship program for electrical trades applications are being accepted from November 9, 2020 until February 19, 2021. The five year apprenticeship is an earn while you learn program. Receive on the job training as well as classroom instruction to assist in a successful career in electrical trades. Organizational and Community Leadership Development for Youth (for 4-H members)

Penn State Extension is offering a free webinar series on leadership development! High School students learn leadership and communication skills, as well as, importance of community involvement. For more information and registration click on “MORE INFORMATION” link.

VISION’s 5k Fundraiser call for volunteers

Schuylkill County’s VISION is hosting their annual 5k fundraiser, Spooky Schuylkill 5k: Zombie Run/Walk, on October 31, 2020. The run is held in Landingville, PA and is Halloween themed. Runners will pass zombies along the course and have a chance to win costume prizes. VISION is seeking volunteers to play zombies, take pictures and assist with day of activities.

VISION can verify any volunteer hours for community service requirements.

Make a Difference Day

Community Volunteers in Action is hosting the annual “Make a Difference Day”, which is held on the 4th weekend of October. While it may be too late to organize an event it’s not too late to see if anyone needs help with their events. To learn more contact Kim Blum at kblum@co.schuylkill.pa.us.

Election 2020

As you probably all are aware Election Day is right around the corner!

Important dates to remember:

October 19th: Last day to register to vote

October 27: Election Bureau must receive application for mail in ballot.

November 3: Election Day!! All mail in ballots must be postmarked. Mail in ballots can also be dropped in secure box at Schuylkill County Election Bureau, 420 N Centre Street, Pottsville, PA (building next to Post Office).

Follow all mail in ballot directions to the T! Use the correct ink and include all materials in TWO envelopes to cast ballot.
